This was fantastic Lani. An incredible story, so well told. It's funny reading such an honest and introspective piece from a 50 year old - I am 26 and feel myself asking big questions all the time, trying my best not to create too many regrets.

To your point about the taboo-ness of self-help - I've enjoyed reading them for years now, and always encourage my brother to do so. Every single time, it's not just met with a "No thanks," but more of an opportunity for him to remind me how much he DOESN'T need them... it's very funny. I think many people view them as a sign of weakness perhaps. Ironically, you could make the argument that they are precisely the people who need it!

Anywho, I'm rambling. A great post, I'm subscribing to read the next ones!

Thanks, Ned.

Yeah, self-help comes with baggage for those who don't want to recognize that we all have it. But different folks need/want/like different packaging. Therapy, for example, seems quite popular, especially among literary people, but that's not something I could afford, nor is it something I'm interested in.

It's best to not admit that you like self-improvement material. 😂 But for me, as you've read, it's been life-changing. Thanks, again, off to check out your 'stack.

Loved everything about this Lani! Your insight, your language, your storytelling hit all the right notes for me, a bonafide self-help/personal growth junkie!! One of my favorite teachers was Wayne Dyer who said “when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”. With the share of your step-father’s story, change you did!!

Thanks, Lisa, this means a lot! Yes, I listened to Wayne Dyer plenty throughout the years. It was sad to hear of his death, but then again, he avoided all the covid madness!

Thank you for your voice! How I related throughout your writing and journey. I feel so seen, as I too am a self-help, Marianne Williamson fan. Just started re-reading A Course in Miracles actually bc of my on-again off-again obsession with her.

Also, to move beyond hate and resentment is the real deal. 👏

Ooooo. Happy to meet another fan. Surprisingly rare, or maybe everyone else has simply joined her Presidential bid. She has a Substack, and for awhile I was receiving her daily meditations. And I can't remember how many times I've re-read or re-listened to ACM, timeless. Thanks for commenting and finding me. Woohoo!

I love your writing on this. My style is similar which probably has something to do with it!

Thanks, Paul. I, too, like to read similar styles, but of course, am always blown away by those who write with great detail, or in a way that I find different. Cheers.
