Oh, wonderful. Thank you. I’m glad you listened. I took a break from Substack and have been trying to get back. I’ll need to keep catching up. Thanks again, Milena, xo
You are welcome, Lani! I've also been quite on and off in the last couple of months, and have a lot to catch up on but taking it easy, hope you too! :)
Wow Lani, how were you able to remember these stories? I've never attempted to write down any of my parents' stories, and wonder if I could put them together at all!
I would often ask my mom to tell me this or that, and yes, I did write down my grandma’s stories. I also had to do a lot of research to fill in the blanks, so to speak, and make sure that what she said held up against history. Thanks, Lou, for reading along, xo
Fascinating read, Lani and so humbling to read about the unsettling things your family has been through. You're lucky to know so much detail about them - and we're lucky you're sharing it here! I think your dad would be so proud.
Thank you. I’m glad it looks like I pulled it off because behind the scenes it was a real bear trying to make sense of timelines and notes and fill in the details through research. Appreciate it, Sue!
What a treasure to have heard these tales from your grandmother, a reminder of how much migration and survival are a continuous thread in our collective human histories.
What a family history! Your father certainly looks like an elegant young dragon (in the sense of an aspiring dragon of wisdom) on these photos. The trauma behind those eyes is veiled well behind the gentle features and gaze.
Thank you so much for sharing a glimpse into your world, which has always existed parallel to mine, without me ever knowing... 🙏 🐉 💕
Thanks, Veronika. I am, too, enjoying learning about our parallel lives. I have a particular fondness for family history. 💕 And thank you for noticing my father, he did live a brief, but extraordinary life. xo
Another captivating instalment! I listened for the first time now and loved it, will continue listening to the next chapters too :)

I love that you collected these stories, Lani.
Thanks, Holly! xo

Thanks Lani, such emotive descriptions here (and in part 1!). I love the accompanying photos, they really add a richness to your words.
Thanks, Sarah. I'm glad I made copies of them. I wish all photos had dates and places written on the back though! Appreciate you reading along. xo

I'm so glad you took notes!
I have my brother to thank. I remember we argued about who’s job it was going to be to do this. 😂
Wow, what an incredible story, Lani!
Thanks, Jeffrey. And thanks for the restack. You’re so supportive, and it means a lot!

Yes, you put it beautifully Atreyee. Thanks!
What an interesting story! I'm hooked.
Thanks, Heather! xxoo
